Surrogacy for Heterosexual Couples
For many heterosexual couples facing significant fertility challenges, surrogacy often becomes the final step in their journey to parenthood. At Med-IVF, we create families through gestational surrogacy for couples looking for a path to parenthood.
Getting Started
Options for surrogacy are available in multiple countries. In a Surrogacy program, the Prospective Parents, also referred to as Intended parents (IP) or commissioning parents, are the couple who want to have a child. Surrogates are women who carry the pregnancy to term and deliver the baby for the IP, though they are not legally recognized as the child’s mother.
Becoming Prospective Parents
Successful Surrogacy requires a mutual commitment from all involved parties. While couples embarking on this journey are deeply invested in the process, the journey wouldn’t be possible without a surrogate. Below are some of the common reasons couples turn to Surrogacy:
·
Absence or damage to the uterus
·
Health conditions that make pregnancy risky for
mother or fetus
·
Uterine abnormalities
·
Repeated IVF failures or miscarriages
Steps for Surrogacy with Med-IVF
The surrogacy process for heterosexual couples includes a few essential steps:
·
Finding and confirming a surrogate
·
Completing contracts and agreements to begin
legally
·
Starting the IVF process at a renewed and
certified clinic
·
Securing all necessary legal documents for
parentage after childbirth.
Each of these steps is essential. One of the most important and sometimes difficult decisions for prospective parents is choosing the surrogate who will carry their child. Surrogacy can be a lengthy process, and it’s crucial to work with experienced professionals. At Med-IVF, our specialists carefully assess your unique situation in order to match to meet your needs and assure a high standard service.
Selecting a Surrogate
Many intended parents feel more secure choosing an experienced surrogate who has previously carried a pregnancy to term. However, some prefer a surrogate without prior experience. In either case, these surrogates are typically women who are already mothers and familiar with pregnancy and childbirth. The process for selecting a surrogate can take between 3 to 6 months. In every case the Intended parents will be informed of the conditions of the surrogate mother and decide to move on or try another option.
Creating a Mutual Legal Agreement
The Intended parents’ relationship with their surrogate mother will be officialized in a legal document/ agreement where both parties shall have a clear view of their roles and responsibilities throughout the surrogacy journey.
Initiating the IVF Process
With a signed agreement, the IVF process begins. This includes synchronizing the menstrual cycles of the intended mother and surrogate (if an egg donor isn’t used) and retrieving eggs and sperm. The fertilized embryo is created in the lab and then implanted into the surrogate’s uterus. Following implantation, a pregnancy test confirms the pregnancy. Once confirmed, the surrogate will carry the child for the intended parents. After the birth, intended parents may need to apply for parental custody, depending on the country’s surrogacy laws. For example, in Canada, surrogacy is permitted for married heterosexual couples who can demonstrate a valid reason for pursuing surrogacy, while in the USA, heterosexual couples face fewer requirements. Such legal distinctions emphasize the need for expert guidance throughout the process. Med-IVF partners with leading IVF clinics and donor agencies to simplify your surrogacy journey.
